There are arguments both for and against classifying obesity as an eating disorder. It is true that many obese persons have disordered eating; if nothing else, the binge eating that is often associated with obesity constitutes an eating disorder. Such a label, however, has important implications. Considering obesity an eating disorder implies that it is not a disorder of another sort, say a metabolic disorder or a genetic disorder. Such an inference may lead researchers and clinicians to focus on one aspect of the disorder (eating) and pay less attention to important physiological factors. It may also contribute to "blaming the victim" because most people feel that eating is a matter of personal control.
