And as illustrated, not all experimenters are smart enough to see the connections even when they are there. Furthermore, it was clear from my own experience that researchers did not typically do everything they could, or indeed do anything, to mitigate pain and suffering in experimental animals, even when it would not interfere with their experiment to do so. Laziness, ignorance, habit, ideological disregard of animal suffering and of the morality of animal use all combined to assure that animals did not receive the best treatment possible in research.
